The families are all asked (actually, they asked us first!) to purchase a school uniform. For those who don’t have an income source (many brick kiln workers), we’d like to establish a scholarship fund. Each uniform costs $15, and shoes cost $5. And there are around 15-25 kids without any funds per year group.
Uniforms are a bit more important over there than they are here. Its like a badge of honor, to be able to wear a uniform to school, and be seen as having a place to belong, and a place to learn.
Its always amazing to see how clean they are able to keep their uniforms. Parents often take a real pride in cleaning the shirts and dresses to perfection, and starching when possible. They are so pleased to have the opportunity to educate their children!!
